Description
The arms that hug away our worries, the kisses which miraculously heal our wounds, the laps which are heavens on earth, Mothers are the centre of the universe for any child on this earth. Keeping aside a day in the year to celebrate all the things good about the mother is our gift to her. Getting the family together around her, showering her with gifts, and celebrating the day with a cake from HalfCute, is the best kind of day you can give her.
Celebrating motherhood through the ages.
A day celebrating motherhood and all mothers have been around for many generations. It is not a recent phenomenon as thought by some.
The earliest recorded Mother’s Day celebrations were found in the ancient Greek society, which was dedicated to the mother of all deities, Rhea, the wife of Cronus. The Roman society did this as a spring festival were they venerated Cybele, the mother goddesses.
This tradition was carried on to Christianity where they had a Sunday during spring to honour the Virgin Mary, the mother of Christ. In the early 16th century England, this Sunday was expanded to honour all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday. Traditions of visiting mothers on this day, presenting gifts to them and celebrating them were formed during this period.
The modern age Mother’s Day was proposed by Julia Ward in 1872 in America. She wanted the mothers to rise against the civil war. She wrote her famous ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ and suggested that June 2 be observed as Mother’s Day.
But the modern-day version of Mother’s Day is dedicated to Anna Jarvis. She did this in honour of her mother’s memory, who wanted to have a day to honour mothers. The trend caught on in America and spread across the world.
Every country has had its own variation of Mother’s Day. Whatever the day is called across the globe, the feeling behind the celebration remains the same. Thanking your mother for all their efforts. With celebrations ranging from prayers and family meetings, to barbeques and feasting, the old ways have given way to more new forms of celebrations.
In today’s fast-paced world, Mother’s Day is a nice reminder for honouring the role of a mother in our lives. When we make an effort to spend time with her and shower her with affection, it makes her feel special. Little trinkets to adorn her, flowers to brighten her day and a cake to top the celebration… nothing better to say Happy Mother’s Day!
